“_____________, I’d be happy to email you our information. I have a lot of different things I could send, but I but do you mind if I ask you just a couple of quick questions so I can only send you those things that you’d be most interested in?”
“___________, my experience is that our information usually just gets buried at the bottom of the inbox and that doesn’t do either one of us any good. Now that we’re on the phone together, I can answer any of your immediate questions and then you’ll be in a better position to decide whether or not it makes sense to send you information. Let me ask you a few questions …”
“I’ll be happy to do that __________, but until we know if this is truly a fit for you, I’d be wasting your time. Might I suggest we take a couple of minutes right now to discuss your situation. After that, if you’re really interested, I’d be glad to get something out to you – is that fair?”
“We have lots of different materials. Is there is something specific that would be helpful to you?” Then be silent and wait.
“It’s too expensive.”
“Thanks for sharing that with me. Let me tell you why we price this the way we do, and what you get for that pricing…”
I agree, it’s a lot of money to invest all at once. Would it help if we could offer you a payment plan where you could pay for part of your booth each week or month?”
“I need to think about it.”
Whenever you encounter this objection, don’t make things awkward by trying to discourage the customer or rush up the sale. Instead, accept their response by saying “I understand” or “No problem” to make them comfortable.
“I understand completely, ______________. A decision like this needs some time. I would like to recommend is that I give you a call next week to get your thoughts and to determine the next steps. How does Wednesday at 8:45 look on your calendar?”
If the prospect balks at your first suggestion, try another date and time and see if they positively respond. If they balk again, ask when would be a good time and date. If they cannot make a commitment, chances are they are really saying ‘no’.
“I understand completely. If I were in your shoes I’d want to think about it as well. May I ask what is causing you to hesitate?”
This type of probing gets the prospect to open up and to help you determine if the objection is real or otherwise.
“Fair enough, but ______________, we’ve spent a bit of time reviewing this and there seems to be a good fit. Please level with me, “What’s holding you back?”
The prospects name is used deliberately to create a bond of familiarity and it gets the prospect to listen more closely. Next, pointing out that a “bit of time” was used up and the implication is that you are at least owed an explanation. In addition, the use of ‘level with me’ is, in effect, saying ‘hey, no games here, let’s be honest with one another.’
“I’m not interested.”
“Not a problem at all, that’s what almost everyone tells me at first until they hear how our shows can bring them a lot of new business. Companies like ______________ and _________________ (insert a couple of their competitors) used to think that, but now they are some of our best customers. Can I ask why aren’t you interested?”
“Not a problem at all, that’s what almost everyone tells me at first until they hear how our shows can bring them a lot of new business. Last year, we had more than 1000 exhibitors over our 9 shows, and many of them initially felt the same way. Can I ask why aren’t you interested?”
“__________, what I’m hearing from you is essentially a no, and that’s alright. As a salesperson, I hear that all the time and it doesn’t bother me. It just means I haven’t explained the value proposition correctly. Tell me, what would it take to convince you that this would be a good idea to move forward with – and please be honest with me.”
“How do others do at the show?”
“Exhibitors are often hesitant to tell us how well they do at the show. They think that we will raise our prices or let their competitors in on ‘their secret’. Even though they don’t share specifics, the fact that the majority of our exhibitors return year after year tells me that they are successful. We have many exhibitors who have been with us for 5, 10 or even 20 years.”
“I can tell you that some of our exhibitors do very well, and some don’t. When I walk through a show, I can usually tell right away who falls into each category. What you get out of the show is directly influenced by what you put into it.”
